Friday 09/03/10 California Legislature Sends Smog Check Bill to Governor
The California State Assembly has agreed to state senate amendments to California Act 787, the “Smog Check: Vehicle Repair and Assistance Program.” The amendments change the requirement to pay the owner of a motor vehicle that has failed its most recent smog check inspection a minimum amount of money for the retirement of his or her motor vehicle. It would also make the repair assistance program available only to specified low-income individuals. The bill was originally introduced by Assembly Member Jerry Hill, D-District 19, and is now in the governor’s office awaiting a signature.

Tire Pressure Regulation Approved
The California Tire Pressure Regulation final rules package submitted by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) was recently approved by the Office of Administrative Law (OAL). In addition, the petition for an early effective date of Sept. 1, 2010, was granted.

NASTF Fall General Meeting in Las Vegas
The National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) will hold the Fall General Meeting on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at 1:30 pm in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Room South Pacific C. This year’s Fall meeting features the usual committee updates, along with a panel discussion titled Maximizing the Value of the SDRM. The Secure Data Release Model (SDRM) is currently used to access secure data such as key codes and pin codes. In addition, there will be a special report on progress by the Canadian CASIS group to establish a similar process of ensuring information availability in Canada. “This year’s Fall meeting promises to be one of the best yet,” said Charlie Gorman, NASTF Chairman. “The panel discussion will explore how the automotive service industry might leverage the value of the SDRM into not-so-obvious areas where such a system can provide real efficiencies.”
